Walking
The medina is navigated on foot. Most streets are too narrow for cars and many are inaccessible to any vehicle. Download Google Maps offline before arriving — the medina is well-mapped and the offline version works without data. Within the medina, walking is both the only practical option and the right way to experience it. Distances are deceptive: the medina's irregular street layout means a 400-metre point-to-point journey can take 15 minutes of actual walking through alleys.
Between the medina and Guéliz, the walk along Avenue Mohammed V takes 25 minutes. Worth doing once for orientation; taxi is more practical for subsequent trips.
Petit taxi
Small metered taxis (typically Dacia Logan, coloured beige or orange) serve intra-city journeys, taking up to 3 passengers. The meter is the official pricing mechanism. Common meter rates in 2026: medina-to-Guéliz, 20–35 MAD; medina-to-Hivernage, 25–40 MAD; medina-to-airport (6 km), 50–80 MAD.
If a driver says the meter is broken or doesn't turn it on, negotiate a price before the journey starts or take a different cab. "The meter" is a non-negotiable starting point — drivers who refuse to use it are setting up a price dispute at the destination. Grand taxis (larger Mercedes sedans) serve inter-city routes and airport runs at fixed shared rates; they are not the standard in-city option.
Careem (ride-hailing)
Careem (owned by Uber since 2019, operating independently in Morocco) works in Marrakech as a fixed-price, GPS-tracked alternative to street taxis. It eliminates the meter negotiation. Prices are typically 10–20% higher than a metered taxi for standard journeys, but the fixed price and tracking are worth it if you find negotiation stressful. Calèche (horse-drawn carriage)
The traditional horse-drawn carriages operate around the city walls and between the medina and Guéliz. Fine if that's what you want; not a practical transport option and not how locals travel. The horses in good calèche operations are reasonably well cared for; the ethics of the sector vary.
Renting a car
Not recommended for the medina or Guéliz — neither is designed for cars and parking is difficult. Worthwhile if you're doing multiple day trips (Atlas, Essaouira) and want schedule flexibility. International rental agencies operate at the airport; local agencies in Guéliz are cheaper. An international driving licence is not required for EU licence holders, but check your insurance coverage before leaving.
From the airport
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is 6 km southwest of the medina. Official taxi stand inside arrivals: negotiate the price there (50–80 MAD to the medina) rather than accepting the first driver who approaches in the terminal.
