Hivernage is Marrakech's hotel and nightlife district, immediately south of the medina walls. It has the city's highest concentration of large international properties, most of its rooftop bars, and the kind of evening infrastructure that doesn't exist inside the medina. It's also where price floors start high and rarely justify the premium over what you'd get in the medina for less.

The district developed as a European residential quarter during the French Protectorate period, designed for the winter tourist season (hivernage means wintering in French — the area's name reflects its original purpose as a pleasant winter retreat for European visitors). Wide, shaded streets, large properties, and a calmer pace than either the medina or Guéliz. Today it's anchored by the Palais des Congrès (conference centre) and a string of international hotel brands: Mamounia, Es Saadi, Sofitel, Movenpick, and others.

Hivernage accommodation makes most sense if you want: large-hotel amenities (full spa, multiple pools, consistent room service, concierge, security); proximity to the medina without staying inside it (10–15 minutes by taxi to Jemaa el-Fna); or access to Marrakech's nightlife, which is concentrated in and around this district. For travellers prioritising cultural immersion or value, the medina's riads deliver more per dirham.
Evenings in Hivernage
The rooftop bar culture in Marrakech is concentrated in Hivernage and the medina's northern edge. The better hotel properties have bars with genuine panoramic views and cocktail programs that have improved significantly since 2018. Nightclubs — a category that exists in Marrakech in limited form — are almost exclusively in Hivernage and operate from around midnight to 4am. The area around the Es Saadi and Palais des Congrès becomes the city's main nightlife zone on weekends.
Getting to and from Hivernage
Petit taxi from the medina: 10–15 minutes, 25–40 MAD. Walking from Jemaa el-Fna to Hivernage takes about 20 minutes through the Bab Jdid gate and along Avenue Bab Jdid. The walk is fine by day; taxi is more practical late at night.
